Search engines appeared when the words written in the language of hypertext markup became too many, and finding the right one became difficult.

Історія пошукових систем - 2-

The first search engine was called "Aliweb" (launched in 1993), it still exists, but has a very low popularity. The second search engine was the well-known "Yahoo!", created in 1994.

What method did the founders of search engines use? You won't believe it, but this is a method of finding literature in libraries! Initially, these were thematic catalogs with categories, where there were lists of certain sites. The user simply found a category that interested him and received a list of sites dedicated to it. At first everything worked very well and configured, until the time when there were not too many sites and the search did not become difficult. Accordingly, the number of headings increased, sub-headings appeared.

Then "search instructions" began to appear (acted according to the "question-answer" principle). But it was also not easy to understand the search results among the 100 or more titles that appeared as a result of the answer. Therefore, choosing a few useful and relevant links from a bunch of unnecessary ones became the main task of the search market at that time.

Almost all search engines then did a 4-step process: indexing information, entering it into the database, cutting pages into constituent words. Thus, the accuracy of the result depended on the specificity of the request that the person asked, as well as the coincidence of the request and the constituent word. Those pages that had a greater search weight, accuracy of the search phrase, and the most recent update date appeared first. Thus, the search results were ranked.

Now, search engines differ from each other in their actual ranking mechanisms. About 200-300 factors influence the search results of the system, which are well hidden from competitors.
