I think you've already heard a lot about SEO, maybe even enough to get bored of it. Are you familiar with such a concept as SMO?

The purpose of SMO (from English Social Media Optimization) is to advertise the site in social networks and attract visitors from these areas. These can be blogs, Twitter, blog diaries, forums, etc. That is, in general, SMO is site optimization for social networks.

The popularity of SMO is growing little by little. The years 2003-2004 are decisive in the development of social media, and every year the number of members of such social networks continues to grow.

Rohit Bhargava first used the term SMO and defined the rules for the SMO optimizer:

  • constantly increase the number of external and internal links;
  • adjust the work of RSS and bookmarks;
  • distribute content from the site.

But now SMO (compared to SEO) remains a rather unexplored way of website promotion and, unfortunately, not even all optimizers know well how SMO differs from SEO.

The biggest advantage of SMO is that this method of optimization does not require intermediaries, there is direct contact with users, while in SEO the role of an intermediary is played by the search engine.

The "viral" method of transferring content from user to user (which is actually what SMO is designed for) is very powerful. But in order for this to happen, you need to really interest your readers, provide them with interesting and unique information, and creatively approach the creation of such content. Then visitors will want to post this or that information on their blog, which will be read by other visitors, and so on.

Social network users are more open to receiving any information, trust more in cooperation via the Internet, are interested in something specific, and are more active in general. They spend an average of 3 times more time online than users who found you through a search engine.

SMO, despite the labor-intensiveness, gives a much greater and longer-lasting effect, compared to SEO, however, today, finding a qualified SMO-optimizer is a big problem.
